Cycling Sisters
The South East Road Club is launching its latest initiative toget people cycling. For the month of September, the club will be running a project called “Cycling Sisters”.
The aim of the project is to get women over the age of 15 out on their bikes; using cycling as a form of transport, as a way to get fit and lose weight or just simply for leisure and enjoyment. All you need to take part is a road-worthy bike and a helmet. The spins are designed to cater for women of all standards and fitness levels.
The brains behind the project, Derek Webb, will be taking riders every Wednesday night and every Sunday morning for spins up to 40km in distance. The routes will be planned to be close to the town of Gorey, so riders will not be too far from home and can head home early if they find the going tough. The speed will be nice and easy so everybody will enjoy it and most importantly get to meet more women who are keen cyclists.
In addition to the spins, practical advice will be given to riders about bike set up, changing a puncture, cycling safely on the road and advice on clothing, as well as other practical advice needed to improve your knowledge of cycling.
While out on the road Derek has noticed a lot of women out cycling alone. He feels that what is really needed is for these women to be introduced to other like-minded women, so they can form a ‘chain gang’ and eventually arrange spins between themselves. If the project takes off for September we will look to continue it for a while longer.
Peter and Grace Sinnott in Revolve Bike Shop have also thrown their weight behind the project by offering free bike set up to any ladies who part take in the event.
“Having your bike set up properly is the single most important thing you can do. If your saddle is too low or too high, it will cause cramping in the legs and discomfort. A lot of people who cycle for the first time believe their aches and pains are due to the distance they have cycled and the difficulty of the terrain, when in fact it is often down to the fact that their bike doesn’t fit them properly” states Peter.
